RLoTFC: Well, it's really good. But it's probably not as good as a blow job. ;)
CBG: Hmmm. Which album is it most like? Tough call. Overall, the album has a pretty mellow tone.
I suppose it reminds me most of "Maroon". And maybe a little bit of "Barenaked Ladies are Me".
I've literally been listening to it all day and I'm still hearing new things every play through. And I'm liking it more every time.
To the big question: Steven Page.
I'm the first to admit that I was so sad when I heard Steven was leaving BNL. His beautiful voice was definitely a contributing factor to BNL's unique sound.
But, I saw them live in October, and, to my very pleasant surprise, I honestly didn't "miss" Steven during the concert. Ed did most of the leads and he really did an awesome job. If you've seen them live, you know that they always give a fun show. Sans Steven was no exception there, either.
I also have their live album from last Spring - their first big performance since Steven left. When I listen to that one, I DO miss Steven. I hear the start of one of "his" songs and my brain just expects to hear his voice. When I don't, it's still a little bit of a shock to the system.
BUT ... with this new album, my brain doesn't play that trick on me.
This album definitely has the sound and "feel" of a BNL album, but, at the same time, it feels new and different.
Ed rocks the majority of the lead vocals. I especially love "You Run Away" and "I Have Learned" and "The Love We're In" and "Ordinary".
And, every BNL fan is going to love "Four Seconds". :)
But - surprise! surprise! - Kevin and Jim each take lead vocals on a couple of songs and I LOVE those, too!
I think if Steven was still around, we might not have had the hauntingly lovely "Another Heartbreak" and "Watching the Northern Lights" by Kevin and "On the Lookout" by Jim. And, honestly, they are terrific!
CBG, if you are a long-time fan, you should get "All in Good Time".
I might be biased - I've been a huge fan of BNL since "Gordon" - but I really love this new album.
I think you, too, will be pleasantly surprised by the "new" sound. And if you do check it out, please, let me know what YOU think! :)
The only thing better than a new album by your favorite band is a new book by your favorite author. Aaaaand maybe a blowjob. But it's close.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, hope it lives up to your expectations!
I've been a fan of BNL since before they released their first CD. Hell...I've still got a copy of their original "yellow cassette"!
ReplyDeleteSo having said that, I haven't bought the new album yet. If you had to compare it to previous albums, which one is it closest to?
And can you REALLY tell that Steven Page isn't there anymore or does Ed totally make-up for it?

I didn't know they had a new one out. Will definitely go on my list.
